PUBLIC EDITOR: An ear and a voice for BP readers
Hello BP readership!
My name is Tamar Willis, a member of Shalhevet’s Class of 2014 and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus. I am excited to announce that starting this issue, I will be serving as the Boiling Point’s Public Editor.
This means that any comments, criticisms, concerns or complaints you have about anything published in the Boiling Point — either online or in print — can be sent to me. I will ruminate on said critique and offer my opinion on the matter as an outside party.
With the installation of a Public Editor, we hope to give our readers a forum for expressing their gripes and meriting a response. Writing to me is different from writing a Letter to the Editor in that it would be intended not for publication but for investigation and reply. I may excerpt or paraphrase your comments in answering them, however. And hopefully you won’t have to wait for the next print paper for a response. My goal is to address or allay your concerns.
The Boiling Point is an award-winning publication, but like any newspaper, it balances many considerations and can make mistakes. Also, readers don’t always understand all the dimensions of reporting, writing, and creating a story—part of my job is to help present the other side. We believe this is a step in the right direction for fulfilling our newspaper’s mission to be a balanced, fair and accurate source of news.
As for me, I began my Boiling Point career as a staff writer my freshman year at Shalhevet, and subsequently served as Sports Editor, Features Editor, and then Editor-in-Chief. I spent last year on the Kivunim Gap Year Program in Israel, and currently I am a freshman at Princeton University. Here at Princeton, I’ve been writing for a newsmagazine called the Nassau Weekly.
I am looking forward to continuing my relationship with the Boiling Point and engaging with its readers. With the advent of this position, I hope to encourage a dialogue between the reporters and their readers in order to ensure that this publication reaches its highest potential, while remaining a reliable and enjoyable source of information and thought for all of its readers.
Thank you and don’t hesitate to write! You can reach me at [email protected].
