Yom Hazikaron

The Shalhevet community came together on Yom HaZikaron to mourn the loss Israeli soldiers who passed away fighting to establish and protect Israel. A Bat Ami-organized assembly featured Rachel Sharabi, one of Hillel’s Bat Ami, telling the Shalhevet community about her brother, Gil Sharabi, who died in a tragic helicopter accident in February 1997, while on his way to Lebanon for a special mission.

Through a video, Rachel Sharabi’s speech, and several poems dedicated to the soldiers’ bravery and read by students, the Shalhevet community saw the great impact a soldiers’ death has on a family.

Gil Sharabi’s mother remarked in the video that he loved to reassure everyone that everything would always be okay, and that nothing bad would happen to him.

“He always had the biggest smile on his face,” Rachel Sharabi reflected during her speech.  Throughout the video, Gil Sharabi was shown smiling a big toothy grin.

“I’ve learned that you never get over a loss like this in your life–you have to be strong,” she said.
