Editor-In-Chief

Currently in 12th grade, Leila Miller enjoyed her first Dulce de Leche ice cream at five months, became a Harry Potter fanatic at age eight, and got her second ear piercing at 14. An Argentine by birth and fluent in Spanish, she joined The Boiling Point team as a freshman. Her story assignments have led her to her first-ever rock concert at the Troubadour (Say Anything!), watching intense behind-the-scenes Drama rehearsals, and waking up early before school to interview Jewish community leaders in Chile after the earthquake there. Leila is also the Shalhevet choir’s piano accompanist and will go ice skating with you at a moment’s notice!

Rachel Lester

Managing Editor

Senior Rachel Lester has been on staff since freshman year, when she started as Staff Pollster and rose quickly to Chief Layout Editor to Features Editor to Managing Editor, holding as many as three positions at one time. She attended a two-week summer journalism workshop at Harvard-Westlake School and is commonly found in the Boiling Point office at midnight with a few other editors.  Rachel has won three Quill & Scroll awards and this year was awarded Third Place for New Page Design in CSPA’s national Gold Circle Awards. Besides Boiling Point, Rachel is the editor of the yearbook and on Mock Trial, SAC and other committees.

Jordan's Staff Bio Pic

Web Editor

Jordan Banafsheha, a junior, likes playing music on the guitar and piano and has a love for editing pictures and technology in general. He is an avid fan of basketball and loves to play the game. Starting as an assistant to the Web Photo Editor in his sophomore year, Jordan became Deputy Web Editor last fall before taking over the website this semester.  He has a lot of experience in web design and recently started his own web development company.  Jordan is also an intern writer for givemeapps.com.

Deputy Editor-In-Chief

Starting as a staff writer his freshman year to his current role as Deputy Editor-in-Chief, senior Ari Feuer has contentedly risen through the ranks of The Boiling Point, having served as both Sports and Opinion Editors in previous years.  Outside of studies and his role in the newspaper, Ari fills his time with Varsity basketball and the Model Congress debate team.  Go ‘Hawks!

Ariela's STAFF BIO pic

Deputy Web Editor

Ariela has been on the Boiling Point staff since her sophomore year and is now the Deputy Web Editor in her junior year. She started out as a staff writer but after taking a photography course at LACMA, she was convinced that photography was her calling. She then became Web Photo Editor but was promoted to Deputy Web Editor this semester. Ariela has never put down her most precious possession (aside from her Mini Cooper), her Nikon D300. She is also a major sports-aholic and plays on the Firehawk girls varsity basketball and softball teams while also being a black-belt in wushu (kung fu). She is fondly known as Speedy (nickname courtesy of Athletic Director Coach Flava).

Kalil Eden

Outside News Editor

Currently in 11th grade, Kalil Eden has been a staff writer since his freshman year and is now Outside News Editor after having written two on-scene reports from Occupy LA. For relaxation, Kalil maintains a forest garden; plays tennis, ping-pong, and the harmonica; and practices the violin.

Junior Colleen Bazak began working as a staff writer and copy editor for the Boiling Point during her freshman year at Shalhevet. Since then, she has served as Sports Editor and Outside News Editor, and she is now the Features Editor. Rebecca Mandel's Staff Bio Pic

Rebecca Mandel’s interest in communications led her to a summer program at UC Berkeley in Public Relations, Newswriting and Broadcast Journalism, where she conducted interviews for the organization Not In Our Town.  She enjoys all aspects of the arts and entertainment world and especially literature, music, museums, fashion and food.  Rebecca also loves the beach….and anything that is blue. At Shalhevet, she has been a Boiling Point staff writer and is captain of the Girls Tennis Team, vice chair of the Community Service Committee and a member of the Fairness Committee, and has participated on Model UN and Girls Soccer.

Opinion Editor

It’s no wonder that this is Rose Bern’s second semester as the Opinion Editor. Among the many things she enjoys doing–cooking, reading, sun bathing–one of her biggest passions is debating and public speaking, whether at Town Hall, in debate or in print. Now a junior, Rose has been on the Boiling Point staff since her freshman year and covered a variety of topics.  She also is vice chair of the Agenda Committee and participates in Drama, Model Congress and Mock Trial.

When he’s not writing for the Boiling Point, junior Eitan Rothman enjoys playing basketball and participating in Model Congress, Mock Trial and the Firehawk baseball team.  His academic interests include mathematics and science.

Hannah leeba ellenhorn

Life Style Editor

With a reputation for knowing everything that’s trendy, Hannah-Leeba is the go-to person for anything that’s hip and current with the exception of sports.  Her debut article about at-home manicures garnered rave reviews and she has been covering various leisure pursuits ever since, from the Emmy’s and the Oscars to her sophomore blog, called “A Blog by a Blonde.” When she isn’t writing or blogging, Hannah enjoys singing in the choir, being secretary of the Agenda Committtee, and debating on the well, Debate Team, a balancing act she believes is made simpler when it’s done with style and panache. In addition, Hannah hopes that her readers are entertained and transported to a place of serene charm while reading her section.

Emilie Benyowitz is a junior at Shalhevet High School, is currently photo editor of the Boiling Point where she has been on staff since freshman year. Emilie has received four awards for her photojournalism; a national Quill and Scroll award for her photo of the Shalhevet Choir singing at the Holocaust Museum; an Honorable Mention in the NSPA’s National 2011 Story of the Year contest on her photos of the Rabbi Richler protest; third prize in the Los Angeles Jewish Federation’s “The Future is Now” art contest; and a trip to Washington, D.C. for a photo entered in the Anti Defamation League’s National Youth Leadership Mission competition.  You can see some of her winning photos under the Award Winners category at  www.shalhevetboilingpoint.com. Ariana Feder is in 11th grade and has been involved with the Boiling Point since her freshman year. Starting off by trying layout and then becoming a staff writer, she enjoys her position of Advertising Editor because it allows her to spread the word about the Boiling Point. Emeritus Editor-In-Chief

Zev Hurwitz, a freshman at UC San Diego, is Associate News Editor of the UCSD Guardian, and was Editor-in-Chief of the Boiling Point during the  2010-2011 school year. Earlier he had held the positions of Torah Editor and Opinion Editor, and he also was a center on the varsity basketball team, chair of the Constructive Consequences Committee and a weekly volunteer with Koreh LA. He still enjoys long walks on the beach and Chinese food and we’re not sure whether he’s figured out yet that this is not a dating website.

Emeritus Editor-in-Chief

Elana Eden, now a sophomore at UC Berkeley, vowed never to write journalism again after her first catastrophic story for the BP’s Torah section. She became Editor-in-Chief during the 2008-09 school year. After spending a gap year creating controversy in Israel, she promptly moved into a tent on the UC Berkeley campus, which she still #occupies. When she’s not petitioning the government, Elana enjoys sleeping indoors, listening to bossa nova, and pretending to be a coffee snob.

Emeritus Editor-in-Chief

Lexi Gelb was the Editor-In-Chief of the Boiling Point for the 2009-10 school year and is now a freshman at UC Berkeley, after spending a gap year in Israel. While at Shalhevet she was also editor-in-chief of the Literary Magazine and a member of the Debate Team, and she is known as an all-around charming person with a inimitable sense of style.  Lexi spent part of July 2009 in Sderot, Israel, where she worked with traumatized children, and the summer before working on the Navajo Native American reservation in Colarado.

Mrs. Keene Staff pic

Faculty Adviser

Joelle Keene, CJE, has been the faculty advisor of the Boiling Point since 2003. She obtained her master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and went on to work for various newspapers including the Tacoma News-Tribune, Seattle Times, and Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, where she won national, state and local awards for education coverage and investigative reporting. Mrs. Keene enjoys choral music, gardening, championing the importance of the media, and midnight chats with editors, and she and her husband are the parents of three 20-somethings, including two former section editors of The Boiling Point.  However, Mrs. Keene doesn’t want this to be about her, because “It’s all about the reader.”
