BIG MOMENT: The president’s car passes the Newseum, with Mr. Obama inside.

By Eitan E. Schramm, 9th grade

The second my family and I stepped off the train in Washington D.C., I knew I would never take heat for granted again.  It was FREEZING!  I was glad we were on our way to the Newseum — a museum about news — to see President Obama’s second inauguration where it would be nice and warm.

There was so much security just to get in.  After a long wait, we went to the top floor in order to get the best view of the Jumbo-tron in the center of the building.  We had a pretty nice view of the Capitol too, but the people there were too tiny to see.

The inauguration started with lots of people speaking, singing, poem – ing, and finally introducing the 44th President of the USA.  At this point I decided to start paying attention.  The first thing that happened after the president’s introduction was the Oath of Office: “I, Barak Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God.”

After that was the usual inaugural speech.  It was probably a very good speech, but all I heard was, “I am honored to be President again for the second time (in your face Governor Romney); I will help fix this country, I will beat the bad guys; Michelle, Sasha, and Malia, I love you guys blah blah blah.”  No offense to the President.  As you may have noticed by now I have ADHD so that’s pretty much how all speeches sound to me.  Welcome to my world.

Once all the talking was over the parade began.  I would have had a great view of the street below, except there’s always some tall person right in front of me.  So I moved, and we saw the President’s car drive by.  I tried my best to get a perfect view of the President but all I saw was his hand the Presidential Wave. I hoped that Mr. Obama would get out of his car as he did last inauguration, and he did! However, he picked the worst time to leave his vehicle: he didn’t start walking until his car was no longer in view of 95 percent of the people in the Newseum.  Instead, we saw him vacate the premises of his vehicle on the Jumbo-tron behind us.  At the time I thought about my rotten luck.

On the plane ride home, though, I realized how truly lucky I was.  I had seen the President’s car, his hand, his security, his cardboard cutout, and his house, outside and inside!

D.C. was cool!  About 10 degrees Fahrenheit, in fact.
